Kitchen design and remodeling are exciting, but can be stressful. What you are looking for in a kitchen largely depends on your budget, the size of your kitchen, and the wants and needs of you and your family. Here are some ideas to make the most of your kitchen and dining area remodel.
If you have a small kitchen or lots of dishes and appliances, you might want to consider creating more storage places during a kitchen remodel. To do this, you might consider adding more shelves, installing drawers, and removing counter space that is used infrequently and using that space for storage instead. If you have areas in and around your kitchen that do not get a lot of traffic, consider building a pantry area behind a closed door to keep canned goods and other miscellaneous items out of view. You can also install pull-out countertops for use when preparing food, in order to be able to store items on your other countertops throughout the day.
To optimize organization and space, think about where people will sit to enjoy a meal or drink in the kitchen area. This is especially important if you do not have a separate room dedicated to dining. Some ways to incorporate seating into your space include:
Regardless of what kitchen design you are looking for in a remodel, having places to sit makes your kitchen more welcoming and inviting.
Kitchen Islands can add much needed storage and work space for busy kitchens. Use this area for prep, baking or laying out a holiday dinner. If the items you are storing under the island are not used very frequently, you can even place stools or chairs for seating in front of them, allowing you to use the space for multiple purposes.
Depending on what kinds of items you need to store, consider installing different styles of drawers and cabinets depending on those needs. For example, if you have large items such as mixers and coffeemakers that you would rather not keep on the countertop, install some large pull-out drawers. If you have fine china or other dishes that you wish to display, you might want to check out open shelving. There are also many inserts you can add to cabinets and drawers such as tray dividers or knife trays.
Panel-ready appliances include dishwashers and refrigerators that are made to look streamlined next to the drawers and cabinets in your kitchen. This can help your kitchen look more organized because the appliances blend in better with the overall kitchen than stand-alone appliances. These appliances come with a cover installed over the front, and while they may initially be more expensive, most people are willing to keep panel-ready appliances around for longer. The reason for this is that people are less likely to replace a panel-ready appliance for simply going out of style, so long as the appliance is still in good condition.
